H.D Devegowda

Deve Gowda is a politician with a unique personality among the politicians seen in Karnataka. Raised in a truly rural environment, this farmer's son has combined with simplicity stubbornness and determination. Born in a farming family, Gowda, who grew up wandering in the fields of the village, became a people's representative in the 50s as a member of the then Taluk Development Board in Holenaraseepur, Hassan district. His entry into state politics was in 1962 as a member of the Legislative Assembly. He has been making his own footprints in state and national politics till now.

His tenure in office was the shortest in his overall public legislative life of 50 years. He served as a minister for about 4 years from 1983 to 1988, as Chief Minister for one and a half years during 1994-96 and as Prime Minister of the country for 10 months in 1996, totaling about 6 years and 4 months. Except for 6 years and 4 months in his 50 years of continuous political life, he has led a life of struggle throughout his life. That too is a life of struggle going against the tide.A young man from a village became a legislator at the age of 29, a leader of the opposition party at the age of 39, a minister at the age of 50, a parliamentarian at the age of 58, a chief minister at the age of 61, a prime minister at the age of 63, and now at the tender age of 89, rose to become a fighter among the people. It is an exciting saga.
